Beach Handball Tactics Board

Beach handball's smaller court and double-point scoring for spectacular plays โ€” spin shots, 360s, inflight goals โ€” creates a tactical environment very different from indoor handball. CourtDraw's beach handball board helps coaches design the fast, dynamic plays and set pieces that score double and plan the defensive rotations needed to shut down quick transitions on a compact sand court.

Beach Handball's Unique Rules

Before diagramming tactics, make sure your players understand the double-point scoring system: any goal scored with a spin shot, 360-degree movement, in-flight (caught and thrown before landing), or from the goalkeeper constitutes a spectacular goal worth two points. This completely changes the tactical calculus โ€” attacking teams should actively seek double-point opportunities.

Diagram the positioning and movement required for each spectacular goal type:

  • Spin shot setup โ€” show the approach angle, the body rotation, and the release point that makes a spin shot legal and effective.
  • In-flight goal โ€” map the pass-and-catch-in-the-air sequence; the timing of the jump and throw must be precisely rehearsed.
  • Goalkeeper goal โ€” the goalkeeper's transition from defense to an attacking goalscoring position; show their movement path and the passing combination that sets them up.

Defense on a Compact Court

The beach handball court (27ร—12m) is roughly half the size of an indoor court, giving defenders much less time to react. The standard defensive alignment is a 2-1 zone โ€” two defenders flanking the goalkeeper area, one defender covering the front zone. Diagram the spacing responsibilities, the lateral slide triggers, and how the zone adjusts when the ball goes wide to the corner.

Against teams that favour spin shots, the defending player must stay tight without fouling โ€” a balance that requires specific positioning: arms up, body balanced, and one step closer to the thrower than the standard gap.

Fast Break and Counter-Attack

Given the court's small size, fast breaks in beach handball are even more explosive than in the indoor game. Diagram:

  • The goalkeeper's outlet pass options (right wing vs left wing vs central forward)
  • The forward's run line to receive without a step violation
  • The finishing shot type recommended based on the defensive positioning

Set Plays and Free Throws

Set plays from free throws are critical in beach handball because the compact court means even a marginal advantage in positioning creates a quality shot. Design a three-player combination: one player sets a screen for the thrower, one cuts behind the screen to receive the pass, and the third occupies the goalkeeper's angle. Draw all three players' movements simultaneously on CourtDraw so the coordination becomes clear before the players walk through it on court.
