Handball Tactics Board

Handball is a game of structured systems โ€” both in attack and defense โ€” where every player has a defined role and triggers specific movement from their teammates. Trying to explain a 6-0 block defense or a crossing play at the 9-metre line in words alone leaves players guessing. CourtDraw gives you an accurate 7v7 handball court where you can diagram every formation and movement before the session begins.

Defensive Systems

Handball defense is defined by its formation โ€” the shape in which the six outfield defenders position themselves relative to the 6-metre line:

  • 6-0 defense โ€” all six defenders on or just inside the 6-metre line, forming a compact wall. Show the spacing (roughly 2โ€“3 metres between each player) and the sliding coordination when the ball moves between positions.
  • 5-1 defense โ€” one defender moves out to pressure the opponent's centre-back at 9 metres; the remaining five hold the 6-metre line. Show how this changes the spacing requirements for the five back players.
  • 3-2-1 defense โ€” aggressive man-to-man hybrid; one defender at 9m, two at 7m, three at 6m. Show the specific assignment for each attacker and how the formation adjusts when the ball is passed.

Attacking Formations

Handball attack is built around the 3-3 structure: three backcourt players (left-back, centre-back, right-back) outside the 9-metre line, two wings, and one pivot inside or near the 6-metre line. Every attack pattern is a variant of how these six positions interact:

  • Crossing play at 9m โ€” centre-back and a back player cross paths to force a defensive switch; the player receiving after the cross has a half-second of separation to shoot. Diagram the cross paths and the pivot's screen to delay pursuit.
  • Pivot screen โ€” the pivot (PV) sets a body screen on the defender covering the shooting back player; show the timing relative to the ball position.
  • Wing break โ€” when a wing player cuts inside after their marker pushes the 6-metre line, creating a run behind the defense; show the wing's cut path and the trigger pass from the centre-back.

Fast Break Organisation

The fast break is handball's highest-percentage scoring opportunity โ€” a transition directly from defense to a numerical advantage before the opposition defense can reset:

  • Wing fast break โ€” the wing player sprints immediately on change of possession; the goalkeeper or pivoting defender targets them with a long outlet pass. Show the wing's run path, the pass target zone, and the finish angle at the post.
  • Organised counter-attack โ€” a slightly slower transition where two or three players push forward together; diagram their lanes and the passing options available at each stage of the break.

7-Metre Throw (Penalty)

The 7-metre throw is a guaranteed shooting opportunity and should be rehearsed as a tactical element. Show the shooter's approach angle, the two primary aiming zones (low corner vs high corner), and โ€” for training purposes โ€” the goalkeeper's statistical tendencies for guessing direction. Many coaches use CourtDraw to show the data: if your goalkeeper dives right 70% of the time, aim left.
