Field Hockey Tactics Board

Field hockey is a high-tempo, highly structured sport where tactical preparation directly translates to on-pitch execution. The penalty corner routine, the high-press trigger, and the circle entry combination all require visual rehearsal before players can execute them reliably under pressure. CourtDraw's field hockey board gives you an accurate pitch view with the shooting circles marked so you can diagram every set piece and tactical system precisely.

Penalty Corner Routines

The penalty corner is field hockey's most structured and rehearsed moment โ€” every player has an exact position and role, and the execution window from injection to shot is typically under three seconds. At elite level, teams rehearse five or six corner variations. Two to diagram immediately:

  • Drag flick โ€” the most common and most dangerous corner option; injector pushes hard to the top of the circle, the "stopper" traps the ball, and the "flicker" executes a drag flick aimed at the post or corner of the goal. Show the stopper's position relative to the top of the D, the flicker's run, and the runners blocking defensive outlets.
  • Short corner โ€” a pass variation; instead of a direct shot, the stopper passes sideways to a second player who shoots first-time from a different angle. Show the second shooter's starting position and run path.

Also diagram the defensive corner structure โ€” five players defending at the goal line before the injection, their sprint paths to pressure the shot, and the goalkeeper's angle positioning for each shot type.

Formation Play

The standard 3-5-2 (three defenders, five midfielders, two forwards) creates defensive compactness while giving the midfield freedom to both support attack and press defensively. Diagram the 3-5-2's key spatial relationships:

  • The three defenders' line spacing relative to the shooting circle
  • The midfield five's press triggers when the opponent has the ball in their defensive third
  • The two forwards' role in the press (first and second presser) and their position when the team is in defensive shape

High Press System

The high press in field hockey is most effective from corner presses after a sideline deflection or when the ball is played back to the goalkeeper. The key principles to diagram:

  • Press trigger โ€” the exact moment to press (back pass to goalkeeper, goalkeeper receiving, defender under pressure on the sideline).
  • First presser โ€” forward or midfielder who attacks the ball carrier immediately; position should cut off the easiest lateral pass option.
  • Second presser โ€” covers the primary pass option; forces the ball backward or toward the sideline.

Circle Attack

Creating circle entries is the central challenge of field hockey attacking play. Three common entry patterns:

  • Diagonal injection โ€” winger runs at the defender diagonally and injects the ball into the circle for a forward running from depth.
  • Overload and switch โ€” three players overload one side of the circle, forcing the defense to shift; a quick switch to the opposite side creates a shooting position from the opposite post.
  • Reverse stick switch โ€” a pass to the left channel where a right-footed attacker runs onto the ball and reverse-stick injects into the circle from a sharp angle.
