Floorball Tactics Board

Floorball's 6v6 format (five outfield players plus goalkeeper) on a 40x20m court creates a high-speed game where tactical preparation is the difference between a reactive team and a cohesive one. CourtDraw's floorball board lets coaches design the 2-2-1 pressing system, plan the power-play overload, and diagram the fast break patterns that exploit defensive transitions before players arrive at training.

Formation and Positioning

The standard floorball formation is 2-2-1: two defenders, two midfielders, one forward. Diagram the formation not as fixed positions but as a dynamic shape:

  • When in possession in the opponents' half: forward at the top, both midfielders supporting wide, both defenders at the halfway line or slightly into the opponent's half.
  • When defending in your own half: forward presses from the front, midfielders compact the central channel, defenders protect the circle approach.
  • The transition position: both midfielders recover quickly when possession is lost; diagram their recovery paths relative to the ball position.

Power Play (5v4)

A floorball power play lasts two minutes and typically uses a 1-3-1 or 2-3 formation. The key principle is to create a high-percentage shot quickly rather than circulating indefinitely:

  • 1-3-1 formation โ€” one player at the top, three across the middle (two half-wall, one in the hole), one in front of the goal. Diagram the rotation when the top player moves to shoot.
  • 2-3 overload โ€” two players high, three low; aims to create quick one-timers from the corners. Show the cross-court pass for the one-timer and the position in front of the goal for the rebound.

Fast Break

Floorball's most productive transitions come from fast breaks โ€” quick counter-attacks before the opponent's defense resets. Show the two most common scenarios:

  • 2v1 breakaway โ€” two attackers vs one defender; the attacker with the ball draws the defender and passes at the last moment to the open teammate for a tap-in.
  • Goalkeeper outlet โ€” goalkeeper catches or stops the ball and immediately outlets with a long throw or kick to a forward breaking the other way before the opponent has transitioned.

Defensive Zone

Defending the shooting circle is floorball's most critical defensive moment. Show the circle coverage positions for the five outfield players when the opponent is in possession near the circle:

  • Two defenders inside the circle approach, one covering the centre and one the side
  • Two midfielders pressing the wide players to prevent the cross
  • The forward pressing the highest ball carrier to delay the attack

Also diagram the penalty shot rules โ€” awarded after a clear scoring opportunity is fouled โ€” and the goalkeeper's positioning and technique for facing a penalty shot.
