Hurling Tactics Board

Hurling is played at pace too fast for players to consciously process tactical decisions during a game โ€” tactical patterns must be rehearsed until they're automatic. CourtDraw's hurling board gives coaches an accurate pitch view for diagramming puckout patterns, half-back attacking plays, and 15-player positional systems that apply equally to hurling and camogie. Share plays before the match โ€” players arrive with the game plan already visualised.

Puckout Strategy

The puckout is one of hurling's most tactical moments โ€” equivalent to a goalkeeper distribution in football. Short puckouts (to the backs or midfielders) invite pressure; long puckouts (to the half-forwards or full-forwards) require aerial superiority. Diagram two puckout patterns:

  • Short puckout loop โ€” goalkeeper to corner back, corner back to centre-back who has broken forward; centre-back to midfielder who has positioned in the half-forward zone. Show the positioning of all players and the decoy runs that create this opening.
  • Long puckout target โ€” goalkeeper targets a specific half-forward who has timed their run to meet the ball at a precise landing zone; show the half-forward's run, the two other half-forwards creating the option space, and the remaining forwards clearing for the incoming ball.

Half-Back Sweeper

The sweeper system โ€” a half-back who drops behind the midfield line to clog the space between the half-forward and full-back lines โ€” has transformed tactical hurling. Diagram the sweeper's positioning responsibilities:

  • Central position covering the corridor between midfielders
  • Lateral adjustment when the ball is on the wing (must track across without losing the central channel)
  • The trigger for breaking forward โ€” when the opposition defense is committed and the sweeper can join the attack

Also diagram the attacking team's response to the sweeper: drawing the sweeper out of position by overloading one side and then switching quickly to the vacated space.

Forward Line Positioning

Six forward positions in hurling โ€” full-forward, two corner-forwards, and three half-forwards โ€” create a layered attacking structure. The tactical challenge is ensuring the forwards offer depth and width while the half-forwards track back to contest midfield when possession is lost.

  • Full-forward as target โ€” the centre full-forward's role in winning aerial contests and laying off to incoming corner-forwards; diagram their position relative to the full-back and the two corner-forward entry angles.
  • Half-forward press โ€” when the opposition is playing short from their goalkeeper, the half-forwards push up to the half-way to contest; diagram the press triggers and the transition when the ball is cleared.

Sideline and Free-Puck Routines

Frees and sideline cuts offer set-play opportunities in hurling that coaches should rehearse as structured combinations. A sideline cut aimed at the half-forward line with a running half-back available behind gives the taker two options; diagram both and the defensive shape that determines which is taken. Show players the two key variables in free-taking: the number of runners and their starting positions relative to the taker, and the decoy runs that manipulate the defensive wall before the ball is struck.
