Beach Soccer Tactics Board

Beach soccer's spectacular scoring — volleys, overhead kicks, scissor shots — demands a tactical understanding of high-ball play, aerial positioning, and sand-specific movement. CourtDraw's beach soccer board helps coaches diagram the 5v5 attacking patterns, plan free kick routines that set up overhead kick finishes, and show the defensive positioning required against a fast, vertical game on sand.

High-Ball and Aerial Play

Unlike grass football, beach soccer rewards spectacular technique — goals scored by volley, overhead kick, or bicycle kick count as any other goal, and the combination of sand (which limits running speed) and the no-bounce preference creates a naturally aerial game. Every tactical system in beach soccer must account for aerial duels:

  • Pivot aerial target — the front player jumps for high balls and flicks them down to arriving teammates; diagram the jumping position, flick direction, and the supporting runners' lanes.
  • Overhead kick sequence — a lofted pass into a specific zone where the attacker can position for an overhead kick; diagram the passer's position, the target aerial zone, and the two secondary positions covering the rebound.
  • Volley from wide delivery — a wide player delivers a cross; the central player jumps for a volley finish; diagram the cross trajectory and the striker's run to the correct aerial contact point.

5v5 Attack Patterns

With five players and no offside rule, beach soccer attack is fluid and vertical:

  • Overloading the central channel — three players driving through the middle simultaneously, forcing the defense to choose; diagram the three runs and the goalkeeper's outlet pass to the centre player.
  • Wide-and-cross — a player makes a wide run to the touchline; a long pass creates a 1v1 with the central defender; the cross is aimed at the back post for an attacking run by two teammates.
  • Goalkeeper counter-throw — the goalkeeper's long throw directly to a striker running in behind the defense; diagram the striker's run angle and the timing of the release.

Free Kicks and Set Pieces

Free kicks in beach soccer are among the most entertaining set pieces in sport — specialists can curl, dip, and rainbow the ball over walls. Diagram the wall position, the fake run to distract the wall, and the intended ball flight path. Also show the secondary option: a pass around the wall to a player who volleys first-time while the goalkeeper is committed to the direct shot.

Pressing on Sand

Because footing is less secure on sand, pressing in beach soccer is more targeted than in grass football. Show the pressing trigger (usually a loose heavy touch) and the compact pressing shape that cuts off the lateral pass while allowing the ball carrier to only play forward into a waiting defender. Sand reduces acceleration, meaning a player who commits to a press has less recovery ability — diagram the cover positions carefully to avoid being caught on a turnover.
