Rugby Union Tactics Board

Rugby union's 15-player game is among the most tactically complex in team sport โ€” lineout calls, scrum plays, kick-chase patterns, and backline moves all require detailed pre-match preparation. CourtDraw's rugby union board gives coaches an accurate full-pitch view for diagramming defensive systems and attack plays, and a touchline-to-touchline width view for showing lineout and scrum plays in detail.

Set Piece: Lineout and Maul

The lineout is rugby union's most structured set piece and one where a tactical advantage is most achievable. Diagram the lineout as a choreographed operation:

  • Jumping position calls โ€” front of the lineout (position 2), middle (position 4 or 6), or tail (position 7 or 8); show how the jumper's position alters the defensive shape and the available receivers.
  • Driving maul โ€” receiver from the lineout is immediately bound by supporting forwards; show the individual binding positions and the coordinated drive direction.
  • Peel around the maul โ€” number 8 or a back row peels off the maul end and attacks the channel between the maul and the defensive line before they can set.

Scrum Plays

From a scrum, the halfback has multiple distribution options, each with specific supporting runs:

  • Blindside attack โ€” ball out to the blindside flanker or wing in the narrow channel between scrum and touchline; effective when the defensive scrum-half is slow to cover.
  • Number 8 pick-and-go โ€” number 8 picks the ball from the base of the scrum and drives directly into the defensive line; diagram the forwards' pod formation ahead of the pick.
  • Wide backline play โ€” quick delivery to the halfback who pops it to the fly-half and the centres run an attacking move (scissors, miss-pass, crash ball) before the opposition defense can reorganise.

Attack Play Patterns

Modern rugby union attack is built around creating width and then exploiting the overlaps that the defense's rush creates:

  • Pod attack โ€” forward pods of three hit the defense in succession, each taking the ball to contact and recycling; show the pods' positions relative to the previous ruck.
  • Offload game โ€” players who take contact at pace with arms free can offload to a support runner before the tackle completes; show the body position and the support runner's line to receive.
  • Back-three counter-attack โ€” full-back or wingers who catch a kick behind the gain line and counter-attack; diagram the two support runners' angles and how they create a 3v2 situation against the covering defense.

Defensive Systems

Two primary defensive systems in modern rugby union:

  • Blitz defense โ€” the entire defensive line advances quickly as the ball leaves the ruck, reducing the attacker's space and time; diagram the alignment relative to the ball and the timing trigger.
  • Drift defense โ€” the line holds and forces the ball wide toward the touchline rather than advancing; diagram the drift angle for each defender relative to their opposite number's inside shoulder.
