Water Polo Tactics Board

Water polo coaching without a tactics board means miming movement patterns on the pool deck and hoping players transpose it to three dimensions in the water. CourtDraw's water polo board gives you an overhead pool view where you can diagram the 6v5 power-play arc, show the 2-meter player positioning, draw driving lanes, and plan counter-attack patterns before players enter the water.

Man-Up (6v5) Power Play

The exclusion foul and resulting man-up is the most tactically structured situation in water polo. Elite teams run rehearsed power-play sets that create high-percentage shooting positions before the excluded defender returns. The standard arc formation:

  • 1-3-2 formation โ€” centre forward (2-metre player) at the post, three wide players, two guards at the top; ball moves quickly to exploit any gap in the five-player defense.
  • Point-to-post combination โ€” ball begins at the "1" (top of the arc), swings quickly to the "2" position wide, then a quick drive to the 2-metre player who shoots from inside the 2-metre area.
  • Skip pass โ€” bypassing the near-side defenders by passing directly across the top of the arc to the opposite weak side; diagram the ball path and the intended shooter's positioning before receiving.

The power play lasts 20 seconds โ€” every player must know their role immediately.

6v6 Half-Court Offense

In even-strength situations, water polo offense is built around the 2-metre player. Diagram:

  • Drive and kick-out โ€” a wide player drives hard toward the 2-metre area to draw the opposing 2-metre defender out of position; if the 2-metre player gets behind them, an immediate pass creates a shooting opportunity.
  • Cross attack โ€” two wing players exchange positions simultaneously to create mismatches in the resulting defensive recovery.
  • Weak-side attack โ€” when the ball is on one wing, the opposite wing drives unseen to the 2-metre area; a skip pass across the pool creates a point-blank shooting position before the defense can recover.

Counter-Attack

Water polo's counter-attack is among the most explosive in any team sport โ€” a goalkeeper throw to a sprinting forward can create a 2v1 or 1v0 situation in two seconds. Diagram the goalkeeper's outlet throw options, the sprinting lanes for the two forwards, and the trailing player's responsibility to cover a turnover.

Goalkeeper Positioning

The goalkeeper's angle positioning โ€” moving off the line to reduce the visible scoring area โ€” is a teachable tactical skill. Diagram the goalkeeper's optimal position for shots from different angles: further off the line for the top of the arc (wider angle), closer to the line for shots from the wings (narrower angle). Showing this geometry on a bird's-eye view gives goalkeepers a reference frame they can apply automatically during the game.
