The Four Shapes, and When Each One Breaks

Five-a-side is small enough that formation is really a question of who covers for whom. Four shapes account for almost every team you will play against, and each one fails in a specific, predictable way.

2-2 (the box). Two back, two forward, and the safest thing you can ask of a team that has not trained together. It defends the middle well and gives a simple passing square. It breaks when both forwards press at once and nobody covers the space they left — diagram the cover rule before you diagram anything else.

1-2-1 (the diamond). A holder, two wide, one up. The best shape for controlling possession and the hardest to play without fit wide players, because they cover the whole length of the pitch. It breaks when the two wide players get dragged narrow and the opposition switches the ball behind them.

3-1. Three across the back and a lone target. This is a chasing shape or a shape for holding a one-goal lead, depending on how high the three sit. It breaks when the lone forward gets isolated and your three have nobody to pass to under pressure.

1-1-2. Aggressive, front-loaded, and the right answer when you need a goal in the last three minutes. It breaks immediately on any turnover, which is the trade you are knowingly making.

Rotation: Why Fixed Positions Lose Small-Sided Games

On a full pitch you can hold a position for ninety minutes. On a court this size you cannot — the ball moves across the whole width in two passes, and a player who stays put is a player standing in a space nobody needs.

The thing worth diagramming is not the starting shape but the swap: who takes the vacated space when a defender steps up, and who drops to replace them. Draw it as a loop rather than four dots. Two or three rehearsed rotations will do more for a casual team than any amount of formation talk.

Defending in a Space This Small

Man-to-man is the instinct and it is usually wrong in five-a-side: one dribble beats one marker and now you are 4v3. Zonal cover, where the nearest player presses and the rest shuffle across to cover the inside, holds up far better against the quick combinations that decide these games.

Diagram the press trigger explicitly — a heavy touch, a back pass, a receiver facing their own goal — so the whole team steps at the same moment instead of one player committing alone.

Set Pieces Are Where Casual Teams Score

Kick-ins, corners and keeper distribution get almost no attention in amateur five-a-side, which is exactly why a rehearsed one works. A simple blocked kick-in routine, or a corner where one player screens for a runner, is worth more goals than another week of shooting practice.

Draw the keeper's options too. In most formats the keeper restarts play, and a side that knows where to be when the ball is rolled out starts every passage in possession rather than fighting for it.

5-a-Side Is Not Futsal

They get used interchangeably and they play nothing alike. Futsal is played on a hard court with a low-bounce ball and strict touchline rules; five-a-side is usually astro, often with rebound walls, and the local league decides half the laws. Rotations that work in futsal frequently do not transfer.

If futsal is what you actually coach, the futsal tactics board covers the 1-2-1 rotation system, pivot play and power play in proper depth. For the eleven-a-side game, use the football tactics board.

How It Works

From blank pitch to shared play in 60 seconds

1

Choose 5-a-side

Open CourtDraw and pick the Futsal Mini / 5-a-side pitch. It loads instantly in your browser — no install, no account.

2

Place your five

Drag player tokens into the shape you want to drill. Solid arrows for passes and runs, dashed for off-ball movement.

3

Draw the rotation

Use multiple phases to show the swap — who steps up, who drops in behind. That loop is the part worth rehearsing.

FAQ

5-a-Side Tactics Board — Questions

What is the best formation for 5-a-side?

There is no single best shape. The 2-2 is the safest default and the easiest to defend with. The 1-2-1 diamond gives you a holder and a target and controls the middle, but it asks a lot of the two wide players. The 3-1 is a chasing shape for when you are behind. Good teams switch between them during a game rather than committing to one.

Does CourtDraw have a 5-a-side pitch?

Yes. The small-sided pitch is listed as Futsal Mini / 5-a-side and opens straight from this page. You can draw shapes, rotations, kick-ins and pressing triggers on it the same way you would on a full-size pitch.

Is the 5-a-side board free?

Yes. CourtDraw is free to start with no account needed. The free plan covers one sport of your choosing and three saved plays. Pro unlocks all 38+ sports, unlimited saves and shareable links.

Can I share a play with my team?

Yes. Export as PNG or PDF, or send a direct link. Players open it in any browser on their phone before the game, with nothing to download and no account to create.

Does it work on a phone at the pitch?

Yes. CourtDraw is a Progressive Web App and works fully offline once loaded, which matters on an astro pitch with no signal. Add it to your home screen for instant touchline access.
